15-16 The day The Dwelling was set up, the Cloud covered The Dwelling of the Tent of Testimony. From sunset until daybreak it was over The Dwelling. It looked like fire. It was like that all the time, the Cloud over The Dwelling and at night looking like fire.
17-23 When the Cloud lifted above the Tent, the People of Israel marched out; and when the Cloud descended the people camped. The People of Israel marched at God’s command and they camped at his command. As long as the Cloud was over The Dwelling, they camped. Even when the Cloud hovered over The Dwelling for many days, they honored God’s command and wouldn’t march. They stayed in camp, obedient to God’s command, as long as the Cloud was over The Dwelling, but the moment God issued orders they marched. If the Cloud stayed only from sunset to daybreak and then lifted at daybreak, they marched. Night or day, it made no difference—when the Cloud lifted, they marched. It made no difference whether the Cloud hovered over The Dwelling for two days or a month or a year, as long as the Cloud was there, they were there. And when the Cloud went up, they got up and marched. They camped at God’s command and they marched at God’s command. They lived obediently by God’s orders as delivered by Moses.
It is here God instituted the Passover meal as a reminder of the great liberation that He had acted upon for the people of Israel. And He would continue to lead these wilderness wanderers by way of His commands and His orders.
And if that is not enough, He provided a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night.
This is part of the Exodus that YHWH had planned to set His people free from the slavery in Egypt. From the yoke of that torturous regime.
And today this pillar of cloud and fire is typified in the Holy Spirit, leading me through the Word revealed in Jesus Christ chronicled in Scripture to form the basis of this New Exodus that is my journey.
The journey of liberation away from the oppressive powers of Egypt and the systems of the world that threatens to hold me down, shackling my limbs with the bonds of fear and cynicism.
In truth, I have been given a gift and a grace to receive God’s commands and direction through the revelation of Jesus Christ, the Word and His Holy Spirit. This is the same Spirit that led Jesus into the wilderness (Luke 4) for 40 days and 40 nights. This is the same Spirit that raised him up in the grave and conquered death. And this is the same Spirit he left for us, as a gift – the Spirit of truth who dwells with me and in me.
May I trust this same Spirit as I embark on this journey of liberation from those oppressive regimes and epicenters of slavery. May this Spirit lead me, a wilderness wanderer, to the truth and confirmation of who am I. This Spirit who raised me from the dead and bringing me Life, to experience all that God has to offer. (John 14)
Dear God, I want to move as Your Spirit moves me. The pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night. In this wilderness, in this desert, I’ll camp and march according to thy commands.
Deliver your orders, my King. Your servant awaits.
